Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry

Amelanchier x grandiflora 'Autumn Brilliance'

The Autumn BrillianceGäó Serviceberry, Amelanchier x grandiflora 'Autumn Brilliance', is a rounded, graceful, smaller tree whose stems will be covered in white blossoms each spring and sweet purplish-black fruit each fall. Its spectacular show of white flowers in early spring is one of its main ornamental features. They begin to flower as a pale pink then fade to snowy white fragrant flowers. The petite blue-green foliage turns a brilliant reddish-orange in the autumn. Autumn Brilliance is adaptable to a very wide range of soils and is also somewhat drought tolerant. This serviceberry is easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. This easy to grow tree will add color and interest to any yard.

Resolved Question: Is Creosote toxic to plants?

My neighbour has splashed creosote all over his fence and its run down the fence and splashed all over my fig tree and various other shrubs. Its difficult to remove because it doesn't mix with water. Its all over the soil although I have taken the top layer away and dumped it over his fence (btw I don't want ccreosote soil, he can have it back). Question is is it toxic to plants? I have removed leaves covered in the stuff but its all over the stem. The plants only a few years old. Obviously I can't eat the figs now. And how can I get rid of it, the smell is awful.

Voting Question: Driver fighting ticket, and insurance claim soon to be received doesn't cover the damages! Angry!?

I finally got my claim settled against the drivers insurance but the problem. Despite the driver receiving a ticket the drivers insurance company said I was 40% at fault so they only paid 60% of my claim and since I am unemployed and couldn't afford my own insurances deductible I accepted but I am still angry that the driver got away with it. There was a landscaping trailer in the westbound lane and I in the eastbound lane well the driver instead of waiting in his lane until I passed he drove head on into my lane so I hit the brakes and turned the vehicle slightly to the right as I could not move over anymore because of the mailboxes and trees and shrubs. It was a residential neighborhood, one block from my home if you can believe that. Well the driver is screaming obscenities he sandwiched himself between my vehicle and the trailer then slowly takes off sideswiping my vehicle then whips the car around like the driver is coming for round 2. I got scared, call 911 and went to my house which the police said I did the right thing because there were 3 crazy people in the car and backup had to be called. Anyways, the adjuster stated that since the trailer was no longer there when police arrived, mind you the police officer got lost (took the officer an hour) and the landscapers had long been finished cutting the grass so of course there weren't going to be there, and because the adjuster states that my car was moving while the accident occurred plus the driver only had rear damage and mine had the whole side except the front is faint, its the side rear that's very visible and the driver said the trailer was on the grass. These were the adjusters reasons: No way I was moving because it would have then been a head on collision, the trailer was on the street because if it were on the grass then why did the driver come in my lane and sideswipe me, because of the angle of how my vehicle was the front in made it but the back end didn't, which is why I had more damage then the driver. It was scuffed on the front side but scrapped on the back side. Also how do I know that the driver didn't get some of the car fixed as the driver canceled multiple appointments with the appraiser? The driver could have just left the back so that it would fit with the drivers story? I don't know. The adjuster still can't understand how the accident occurred but only has speculations. The drivers insurance company have been nothing but liars. The appraiser lied, the day I placed the claim the woman said the adjuster would speak with the police officer, the adjuster said they don't do that, the ticket meant nothing despite the driver confessing to the police officer, saying I would be called and having to call myself, etc. The driver is fighting the ticket and I am pissed off at that as well. What happens if the judge feels like letting the driver off the hook? Will I have to return the check that's coming in the mail soon or will I have to pay the court fees? I spoke w/ the police officer & he stated that the driver admitted it yet the insurance adjuster didn't want to talk to him because of course it wouldn't be in there best interest. Can I sue in small claims court to get the difference? I have been laid-off 3 times so if I did have money you can be assured that I would have filed a claim with my insurance. I could have been killed but no one cares. The driver has a criminal & civil record longer than my leg but that's okay because criminals have more rights than the victims. The drivers insurance serves high-risk and classic cars & the car isn't a classic which leaves the high risk but no one cares about that either. It sure sucks to be penniless.

____________________________________________________________ Cosmic collision that killed dinos gave birth to apples? Decoding Of Apple Genome Suggests Comet Strike 65M Years Ago Forced Plant To Evolve For Survival Jonathan Leake _____________________________________________________________________ The apple may have evolved as a direct result of the comet impact thought to have wiped out dinosaurs 65m years ago, scientists have found. The bizarre theory emerged from the first analysis of the apple genome, which is published this weekend. The study shows that about 65m years ago, the plant that would eventually give rise to the apple tree underwent a massive and rapid genetic change, in which many of its genes were duplicated. The extra genes let the apple adapt to tougher conditions, potentially allowing it to develop bigger, more robust fruit and become a tree rather than a shrub. The discovery may resolve long-standing mystery among scientists over why the apple tree is so different from strawberry and raspberry plants which, despite appearances, are among its closest relatives. Sue Gardiner, a scientist at Plant & Food Research, a New Zealand research centre that helped carry out the study, said, “Around fifty to sixty-five million years ago, the apple ancestor separated from its cousins on the evolutionary pathway. By duplicating almost all of its genome, apples are now very different from related plants. “The timeframe for this change coincides with similar events in other plants, such as poplar trees, and mass extinctions of some species, including the dinosaurs. This suggests that a major environmental event forced certain species, including (the) apple, to evolve for survival.” The researchers worked out the sequence of the 600m base pairs of DNA that make up the apple genome. The term genome describes the structure and sequence of an organism’s DNA and genes. One aim of the research was to understand which genes control factors such as juiciness and flavour and potentially enhance them through genetic engineering or breeding. Roger Hellens, of Plant & Food Research, said, “Now that we have the sequence of the apple genome, we will be able to identify the genes which control the characters that our sensory scientists have identified as most desired by consumers.” The apple genome analysis has also confirmed the identity of the apple’s oldest surviving ancestor — malus sieversii, found in the mountains of southern Kazakhstan. The apple is just one of the organisms whose genetic sequences have recently been published. Last week saw publication of the genomes of wheat and two species of ant. Resolved Question: How am I at descriptions?

I've always thought I had a weakness with descriptions, but I want your opinion. This small excerpt is just description, it isn't even from a story I'm writing and there is no character in it. It was an exercise, but I'm fond of it and I could build a story around it, I suppose. Please, give me constructive criticism. The clearing was a perfect circle. The trees surrounding were covered with long scars and gashes. A mist stayed in the clearing, never leaving with the wind. Upon closer inspection one could see drops and puddles of blood decorating the ground, though none had been spilled in over a hundred years. Strange foot-prints were everywhere; some with six toes, some four feet long, some animal prints, and some human. Long, shallow scars marred the ground; in one place there was a large hole. New plant life refused to grow, but the plants already there had never perished. Yet, they'd never healed from whatever happened in that place. Patches of grass were burned away, a small shrub with small, black holes looked as if an acid had dripped on it. Wind was constantly blowing; in it, hundreds of wispy voices murmured. The only link to the past lay in the exact center of the circle. A single sword stood upright, its blade deep in the earth. Its hilt was brilliant blue, and in the center lay a jewel. The sapphire jewel seemed almost alive, dancing in the swirling mist. So, what do you think?

Resolved Question: Can I prune a Techny Arborvitae tree and use as a shrub?

I bought 2 Techny Arborvitae trees (Thuja occ) on sale for FIFTY NINE CENTS each. I was apparently too excited to find some 'shrubs' for so cheap, that I didn't realize they are actually trees! When I bought them, they were in about 6 inch pots, so I took them home and placed them in 12-inch pots and set them on either side of my drive way. Currently, they are both about 24 inches tall. They look very nice, but now that I know they are TREES, I'm wondering if I can just keep them pruned or will I need to transplant them into real ground? If it makes a difference, I'm in Zone 5.
