Holly Winter Red

Ilex verticillata 'Winter Red'

Winter Red Winterberry, 'Ilex verticillata 'Winter Red', is a female selection that has abundant, large bright red fruit that persist into the winter, which are excellent food for birds. The dark green foliage turns a shiny bronze color in fall. Winterberries are the queens of the fruiting shrub world when ranked for ornamental value. The fruiting branches are great for decoration in the garden or in the house. The leaves drop off the plant in late fall to expose the beautiful berries. You'll need both male and female plants to produce fruits and Red Winterberry requires Ilex 'Southern Gentleman' for pollination and berry production. A wonderful shrub for winter interest, the Winter Red Winterberry shrub reaches 6-8 feet in height and width. It is one of the best plants for fall and winter color.

RIGHT TREES, SHRUBS CAN WITHSTAND WISCONSIN WINTER.(Daybreak)

Winter can be tough on Wisconsin's trees and shrubs. Low temperatures, rapid temperature changes, winter desiccation and the weight of ice and snow can damage vulnerable trees and shrubs. Woody plants gradually acclimate to cold temperatures. Cold-hardiness is initiated by decreasing day length and

Trees, shrubs have purpose

Mike Allen - Tree Care A reader of my Tree Care articles called and asked why I focus the content of my articles on problems with trees and shrubs rather than the benefits? The reader's point is well taken. In my business, when there are no perceived problems with trees or shrubs in the yard, I do

Fall is prime time to plant trees, shrubs

Trees, shrubs beautify the winter landscape

The first lecture I heard on "winter interest in the garden" left me skeptical. "Not my season. Not that interested. I'm shutting it down and staying inside," I thought. Back then I was a vegetable and flower gardener, hadn't learned my shrubs and trees, and probably hadn't learned to use my eyes
