St Johnswort Kalm

Hypericum kalmianum

Kalm St. Johnswort, hypericum kalmianum, is a low growing, mounded shrub with bright yellow flowers, 1-2 in diameter, from July to mid-Aug. It has a deep blue-green foliage and is great for foundation or border planting. It prefers well-drained soil. This xeriscape plant is an upright branching evergreen that typically grows in a dense mound to 2-3' tall. Flowers give way to beaked, oval, brown seed capsules that mature in fall and often persist on the shrub until spring. This compact, easy-to-grow shrub forms nice masses and should be placed where the bright yellow flowers show to full advantage. The flowers bloom for about 6 weeks and butterflies, bumblebees, and other pollinators love the nectar. It has no serious disease or insect problems.
